Obviously, I saw this movie right after it came out. I was actually at camp when it happened, so I didn't realize the effect it had on the entire world yet. But then I watched it and understood.
This is honestly a terrific movie, no matter how made-fun of it is on the media. And I think that it's for two main reasons: characters and songs.
The songs, obviously, are great. They have great messages and are very catchy with good vocals, and since Golden got an Oscar and a Grammy and a whole bunch of other things so I don't think I have to speak to this topic all that much.
But the characters is a topic that I don't think a lot of people emphasize that I think really affects the movie. And not really the characters as in the personalities, but more as in how they are perceived.
Broken down, this movie can be described as "a girl band and a boy band fight for who's better" if you get really, really basic with it. And this description, while not usually specifically for bands, is used a lot. But the way that they're usually used is the boy's group is better than the girl's group, until the girl's group wins something big that proves that they are somebody. But this movie didn't do that.
Instead, they naturally made the girl's group more popular than the boy's, and I think that affected a lot of things in this movie. For example, to go back to my character's point, the girl group (or Huntrix) is seen in various scenes looking amazing and being amazing on stage, and even off stage, which is usual. But you also see Huntrix being lazy slobs, eating a lot, and making weird faces, along with other things, like letting their weaknesses show to each other, to the world, and, more importantly, to the audience. This is almost never shown in simple "boy vs. girl" movies. And I appreciate that aspect a lot.
Because in most girl power movies, you see girls being great. But in this one, you see girls being themselves, and girls being lazy and simple. By themselves, with their friends, etc. And honestly, I think that's equally as powerful as showing girls doing amazing things. And it's also rarely been done before, especially not in a kids' movie.
But yeah. That's the main reason why I appreciate this movie. They made a girl's group who totally and absolutely rocked, along with making them stupid as well. And I think that's important.
Also I feel like it's funny, which I always appreciate. It's less enjoyable as an adult, I can imagine, which is probably why it isn't ranked higher.
And also Romance Saja is the most fine out of all the Saja Boys please SOMEBODY hear me out... Also hot take but best song What It Sounds Like? Anybody...?

Mira!
Zoey is a close second, but Mira I think is better because I'm a fan of hotheaded characters for some reason so personally I love her. Especially since she isn't just an asshole but actually cares, just easy to anger.
Also I feel like I should rank Rumi higher because it's one of those movies that you really come to terms with appreciating the main character, but they also have the issue of being kind of okay. I've talked about "I suck as a main character" Syndrome before, and while it's not quite that, I still feel like Mira and Zoey have more personality.
Anyway. Mira's still best. It would be Bobby but I feel like it wouldn't be fair because he doesn't have enough screen time. Oh well.
